Gleaning

One of my favorite things to do is glean. My mom taught me all about it as a kid when we'd go around town gathering apples and plums from trees in abandoned lots to make juice, syrup, and jams. And then there is this great film "The Gleaners and I" by the grand dame of French new wave cinema Agnes Varda that I saw a few years ago and think about almost everyday. So you can imagine my delight when my dad told me of a place where I could glean a supply of firewood for this winter at a truss mill in Spanish Fork. It's quite a particular process, wood can only be gleaned from 12-12:30, and you have to get there early to ensure a good place in line, but the wood is in ample supply and we are feeling quite prepared for the cold winter months ahead. Viva gleaning!

One more thought....
Your namesake, Zina Lenore Cannon Wood, handles LDS adoption services for the SF Bay area in CA during the 40's, 50's and early 60's. She collected the little flannell blankets that babbies were wrapped in when taken to adoptive families and sewed them into bed sheets. These with quilts made from men's wool suits gathered from area thrift stores were delivered by her to needy families she was aware of.
In the mid 60's she moved to Orem where she began picking up wind fall apples in the local orchards and making apple sauce for people with lots of kids and not so much income. She was a one woman welfare services, all with gleaned goods.
Rock on Z.

Gleaning is a much better word than what we call our official family past time, dumpster diving. We will dumpster dive just about anything. Now I just wish someone would dumpster dive our garage full of dives.
