I know this is nerdy

But I don't really care. In about a week the film version of Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass comes out. I read the books two Christmases ago, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I know there is some controversy amongst the christian world thinking these books are anti-god. I don't care to get into all that, they are based on Paradise Lost and Blake's poetry both of which I love and if they are anti-god so be it. One of my favorite things in these books are that each character has a daemon, which is essentially your soul, that is outside the body and personified in an animal form. Reading the books made me REALLY want a daemon. .. . like the imaginary friend I never had. So when my friend told me about the online quiz where you can find out what your daemon is I was all over it. While a butterfly is not the animal I'd have chosen, I think the description of my personality is surprisingly accurate. I don't know what it means that in the last week I've got two posts with online personality quizzes. .. maybe I'm doing some subconscious soul searching? Anyway, here it is. (p.s. that is a butterfly on my fingers at Foz do Iguacu in Brazil)
BUTTERFLY - Your daemon may be a butterfly. It is ironic that the butterfly traditionally represents the psyche, yet it is one of the least emotive physical forms that your daemon can take. It is very hard to tell what a butterfly is feeling, and perhaps that is why you feel so comfortable with this form. You have many, many friends and a beautiful soul, but you don't like to reveal what your innermost feelings are. You aren't afraid to be yourself - you are vibrant and colourful. But at the same time, you don't like to wear your heart on your sleeve. Take this quiz!

I took the quiz awhile and got a possum and I was so disgruntled, that I took the quiz again, changing some answers (ones where I could have gone either way). I was still a possum! I even did it a third time changing more answers--still a possum! A butterfly is way better. I want to take it again (fourth time's a charm?).

Oops--I took a different quiz, the one on the website for the movie (it's a pretty great website)--it shows you your daemon and tells you its name.

Haha--sorry to comment *again* but I took it again and realized it wasn't a possum I got every time--it was a raccoon (and yes, I did just get it for a fourth time). This time he was named Albus, so I guess that I'm satisfied.

i took the one on the movie site too, and was a fox. I liked this quiz better. but a racoon is so cute! my roommate was a racoon on this site and a fox on the movie one.

I took the one on the movie site too, I was a monkey, sometimes a dog. So flattering. I have a picture of myself holding a butterfly at Iguazu too, only the Argentine side of it!

I was a butterfly too, Zina. And it says that only 7% of the people who take the quiz get that for their animal. Birds of a feather...

All you other bloggers might as well go home.

I guess raccoons are cute, I just associate them as being sort of tricky and sly (and I don't think of myself that way). On your quiz, I got a raven, which I think prefer.

I love that SO MUCH. I should take a daemon quiz. I love these books and I cannot wait for the movie!
I am also supposed to tell you that Virginia Carlston says hello and you should come visit her.

I took the quiz on the movie site, I'm a raccoon, which apparently is even more rare than a butterfly.

zina, every quiz that you recommend, I am the same character/animal/whatever as you are. Guess we're twins. But my mom already knew that.

A list ...

1. I remember years ago, hearing your mom call into Radio West to talk about how much your family loved this series.

2. I am glad someone else thinks the whole atheism and the Golden Compass internet buzz is silly. Why are people so worked up over this movie but fail to even notice the under-aged drinking problem glorified in Ratatouille? My five year old isn't going to see Golden Compass and denounce God at a party, but he might think it's ok to drink if your asked twice just like that lovable Linguini kid. I guess that is a post for another day.

3. You and Cindy should be friends forever. Come to think of it ... are there any of my friends you don't already know?
